Early life
Holly Holm was born in Albuquerque, New Mexico , USA, and grew up in the neighboring settlement of Bosque Farms, the youngest of three children. Her father, Roger - a preacher of the Church of Christ, as a fighter, Holly later received the nickname "daughter of a preacher" - and her mother, Tammy - a massage therapist. The hill has Irish and Swedish roots.
Growing up, Hill played soccer and did gymnastics , swimming and diving . Her parents divorced shortly before she graduated from Manzano High School in 2000; after graduation, she studied at the University of New Mexico for a year. [4] [5] [6]
Kickboxing Amateur Career
The path to a career Hill in boxing and kickboxing began with aerobics classes. Her cardio kickboxing instructor, Mike Winkeljon, soon saw the potential of a fighter in the Hill and began to train her. In the fall of 2001, at the age of 20, she competed in the US ICF National Amateur Championship tournament in Kansas City, Missouri . After winning the first round of the tournament with a TKO win in just 34 seconds, she won the second and final round, and by unanimous decision became a contender for the national title in the international rules of welterweight women, [7] a victory to mark her in the past kickboxing appearance before her professional debut. Her overall amateur kickboxing record was 6-0-2.
Professional boxing career
Hill received several welterweight boxing titles, [8] was highly regarded as one of the best boxers in the world in welterweight, and is considered by some to be one of the best boxers of all time in the same weight category. [9] [10] She was also named the Ring Magazine Woman Fighter for two consecutive years, in 2005 and 2006. She draws the public to her hometown of Albuquerque, having completed all but three of her fights, and only one of her fights has been fought outside of her home state of New Mexico.
In June 2008, she became the undisputed world welterweight champion and holder of belts from 140 to 154, defeating former champion Mary Joe Sanders by decision of the majority of judges. They fought a rematch on October 17, 2008 at the Auburn Hills Palace in a suburb of Detroit, which ended in a draw. [eleven]
On December 2, 2011, Hill was knocked out in the 7th round of the fight with Anne Sophie Mathis of France for the vacant female IBF and WBAN welterweight. Falling into the ring, Hill was severely beaten by Mathis without the intervention of judges. Her defeat was called the disappointment of the year in women's boxing. [12] They fought revenge on June 15, 2012 for the IBF Women's WBF Title and Welterweight Title. Hill defeated Mathis by unanimous decision, becoming the new champion and rehabilitating himself for the past knockout defeat. [13]
Mixed Martial Arts Career
Career start
Hill made her MMA debut on March 4, 2011, in a fight against Christina Domk at an event that her boxing promoter Lenny Frescos helped her get into. She became headlining cards with Jackson fighting teammate Keith Jardine's subordination. [14] Hill won the fight by technical knockout in the second round after her rival was unable to continue due to the kicks inflicted by the Hill. [fifteen]
Hill returned to MMA on September 9, 2011 at Fresquez Productions: a cage clash against Strikeforce's veteran Ian Finney. [16] She defeated Finney by TKO in the third round. [17] [18]
Bellator MMA
On February 28, 2013, Hill debuted at the Bellator MMA in a match against Katie Merrill at the Bellator 91 show in Rio Ranch, New Mexico . [19] Hill won by TKO in the second round. [20] [21]
Hill announced that she wanted to leave boxing after having a boxing match against Mary McGee on May 11, 2013, as she cannot fully concentrate on her MMA career. [22] The message came as punctuation marks in negotiations to organize a title fight between Holm and Norwegian champion Cecilia Brækhus. [23] Hill was defeated by McGee by unanimous decision; for her, this was the last fight in boxing.
Legacy Fighting Championship
On July 19, 2013, Hill faced Allanna Jones in the legacy of Fight Championship 21. [24] She won the fight by knockout by a blow to the head in the second round. [25]
Hill was expected to have Eric Paes' face in the legacy of the Fight Championship on October 24, 2013. [26] however, Paes was removed from the map and Hill instead ran into Nikki Knudsen. Hill won the fight by TKO due to a blow to the body and knees in round two. [27]
On December 6, 2013, Hill faced Angela Hayes at Fresquez Productions: Chaos. [28] She won the battle by unanimous decision.
On April 4, 2014, Hill faced Uliana Werner of the first obsolete FC women's bantamweight champion. She won the fight and the title by TKO in the fifth round due to a header and punch. [29]
Ultimate Fighting Championship
On July 10, 2014, it was announced that Hill had signed a contract for several fights with the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) [30] . Later, the manager of the Hill - Lenny Fresquez said that the contract is designed for five fights [31] .
Hill's debut was expected to take place in UFC 181 against Raquel Pennington. However, on November 13, it was announced that Hill was forced to abandon this battle due to injury [32] . And these two fighters met each other at UFC 184 , where Hill won the battle by a separate decision of the judges.
On July 15, 2015, Hill met Marion Renault at UFC Fight Night 71 [33] , and Hill won this fight by unanimous decision.
UFC lightweight champion title fight
In her career, this is the most important MMA fight to date, Hill clashed with champion Ronda Rosie in the main event of UFC 193 on November 14, 2015. Despite the fact that mass bets were against, Hill controlled most of the fight. She won the fight by knockout in the second round with a kick to the head (hi-kick). Thanks to this victory, Hill ended the victory streak of Ronda Rosie and a three-year reign as champion. [34] Hill was also presented with her first fight of the evening and execution of the Nightly Bonus Award [35] , winning the title, she became the first person of her or the opposite sex to win the championships in both boxing and MMA. After the fight, UFC fighter John Jones named Hill the greatest athlete in the history of martial arts.
UFC Champion Title Defense 2016
At the beginning of February 2016, at the World MMA Awards 2016 in Las Vegas, Holly Hill received awards for the upset and the knockout of the year [36] [37] .
And a little earlier in January, it became known that on March 5, 2016, at the UFC 196 tournament in Las Vegas at the MGM Grand arena, the first title defense will take place, where Holly Holm will meet with the candidate for the UFC women's lightweight champion Misha Tate , who goes without defeat for 2 years [38] .
UFC 208
In November 2016, UFC President Dana White announced that in connection with the appearance of Chris Saiborg, who can not keep her weight down, it is necessary to create a new division and in this connection it was argued that a women's lightweight division is appearing. The first title fight will be held at UFC 208 in New York, where the first contenders for this title will be held, Holi Holm against Germaine De Randemi , officially confirmed that this is the main fight of the evening, which will go down in history as the first title fight of the semi-lightweight division.
Holly Holm lost by unanimous decision.
Battle Style
Hill is a basic boxer, therefore, the style of combat is shock with a minimum of stalls.
