Biography

The well-educated doctor Petru Groza was a large landowner and owner of a great fortune, however, in adulthood, he refused to support the Romanian government and his fortune and headed the country's largest peasant organization, “The Front of Farmers”.

He began his political activity as a member of the Romanian Youth Union, which fought for the separation of Transylvania from Austria-Hungary and its unification with Romania. In 1918 he was elected to the Constituent Assembly of Transylvania . From 1920 to 1927, he was elected five times as a deputy of the Romanian parliament from the People’s Party, and held ministerial posts. In 1927 he left the People's Party and later headed the Front of Farmers, established in 1933, who stood on the positions of agrarian socialism. In 1942 he was imprisoned, from where he was released in early 1944 [3] .

During World War II, he fought against the Antonescu regime. After his overthrow in 1945, he became prime minister of the “coalition government” formed by the National Democratic Front . He served as prime minister until 1952 .

In June 1952, Petru Groza was elected chairman of the Presidium of the Grand National Assembly of Romania , on March 18, 1957, was re-elected to this post [3] .

He was a supporter of communism, but was not a member of the Communist Party of Romania.

After the death of the Storm, the city of Stey was named after him , bearing this name until 1996 .
