At the moment, the virus is poorly understood. It is known that it has many common features with the Prospect Hill orthohantavirus virus. For example, they share one carrier - the ( Microtus californicus ) [4] .
For the first time, samples with this type of virus were detected in 1975 in Orange County , California . At the time of the discovery, no decision was made to isolate Isla Vista virus as a separate species. Later, in 1994-1995, studies of the genome showed that it differs from other hantaviruses [5] . From 1999 to 2016, it was a valid species in the genus Hantavirus [2] , but studies in 2016 did not provide sufficient grounds for maintaining this status and translated the taxon into possible members of the genus [3] .
