The song begins with the sound of a rocket that takes off in front of the listener, flies over his head and explodes behind [3] .
The words of this short song refer to a number of military conflicts that occurred at that time or happened shortly before the release of the album: Brezhnev’s entry of Soviet troops into Afghanistan , the capture of Beirut by the Israeli army under Menachem Begin , the invasion of Leopoldo Galtieri on the Falkland Islands and Margaret Thatcher , who the answer to this began the Falkland War .
The words "Cruiser with the whole crew" means " Sir Galahad ", sunk by a missile launched from an Argentine plane during the Falkland conflict [3] .
“Get Your Filthy Hands Off My Desert”, like other songs from the album, was never performed by Pink Floyd. Nevertheless, the song was performed by Roger Waters during his many solo tours since 1984 [4] .
The words "Brezhnev took Afghanistan" from the song caused the persecution of Pink Floyd in the USSR [4] [5] . For example, in an instruction dated January 10, 1985, the group was accused of "perverting the foreign policy of the USSR (" Aggression of the USSR in Afghanistan ")" [6] .
The sound effect used in this song will then be used as the segue on Roger Waters' solo album Amused to Death , breaking the song “Late Home Tonight” into two parts.
