Biography

Born in the family of a soldier. He graduated from the Higher Naval School. M.V. Frunze (now St. Petersburg Naval Institute ). In 1952-1954 served as a naval officer - ship gunner, then worked at the Kuntsevo Marine Club DOSAAF , was commander of a minesweeper at a rescue station on the Moscow River , and later until 1965 worked as an engineer at Moscow enterprises.

He was buried in Moscow at the Khovansky cemetery (Central Territory, section 34i) [1] .

Creativity

The first story was printed in 1965. In 1968, the New World magazine by A. Twardowski announced his novel Stepan Sergeich. But, twice rejected by censorship, he appeared in the magazine only in 1987. Then the Znamya magazine published another of his novels, A Long Shot (Mantsev Sea). Since then A. Azolsky has been a regular contributor to The New World, Friendship of Peoples, Banner, Continent. In 1997, A. Azolsky was awarded the Booker Prize for the novel “The Cage”. In addition, A. Azolsky’s publications were awarded the prizes of the magazines Friendship of Peoples (1999) and New World (2000). Azolsky was a member of the Union of Writers of the USSR, the Russian PEN Center, a member of the International Association of Writers of Battlemen and Marinists. His novels, novels and short stories were translated into German, Polish, Estonian and Chinese. In criticism, Azolsky’s ability to create an adventurous narrative based on material from the Soviet era, the discovery by him of a new type of character - a heroic loner, who defends his right to life in a situation that is aggravated by the ideology of absurdity, was noted. Parallels were drawn between Azolsky's prose and the literature of the absurd, the works of Graham Green ( Eugene Ermolin ). Based on the works of A. Azolsky, popular films and series were shot: "Saboteur", "Forgotten", "Stepan Sergeich", "Unknown Pages from the Life of a Scout". Azolsky wrote and published until the end of his life - in his February New World for 2008, his short story “penultimate days” was published.
