Biography
The third son of the constable of France is Anna de Montmorency and Madeleine of Savoy.
Initially known as Baron de Méryoux, he entered the service in 1557; August 10, participated in the Battle of Saint-Quentin , where he was captured with his father.
April 5, 1562 granted a knight of the Order of St. Michael .
On December 19, 1562, he fought at the Battle of Dreux , where he commanded an ordonance company of 50 soldiers.
March 19, 1563 in Amboise, was appointed by Charles IX to the post of lieutenant general of the governorship of Paris and Ile de France , which he performed until January 1564.
In the Battle of Saint-Denis on November 10, 1567, he commanded the Swiss. On January 20, 1568, he was appointed Colonel General of the Swiss mercenaries, who led them at the Battle of Moncourt on October 3, 1569. He negotiated the surrender of Saint-Jean-d'Angely , who capitulated after a six-week siege on 2 December.
Accompanied the king when he entered Paris on March 7, 1571; On June 17, he was appointed to the newly created post of Colonel General of Swiss and Graubundes ( Colonel général des Suisses & Grisons ).
In the years 1572-1573 participated in the siege of La Rochelle , fought with great courage and almost died.
In 1574, after the elder brother Francois de Montmorency joined the party of the disgruntled and royal opals, he and his younger brother Guillaume de Tore fled to Switzerland and Germany, from where he returned with mercenary troops to participate in the civil war.
In 1579, after the death of Francois, Marshal Damville became known as Marshal Montmorency, and Charles assumed the title of Count de Damville.
After the day of the barricades of May 12, 1588 and the flight of Henry III from Paris, he joined the king with his troops, then supported his successor Henry IV .
In the battle of Ark on September 11, 1589, he fought at the head of the Swiss regiment Gallati, repulsed several enemy attacks and restrained the enemy, giving time to retreat to the main forces. A few days later, he participated in a two-hour assault on the fortress of Ark, where his detachment killed more than a hundred enemy soldiers. November 1, fought in the attack of the Paris suburbs of Saint-Jacques and Saint-Michel.
In the Battle of Kraon on May 24, 1592, the Duke de Mercher ’s three attacks were repelled, but Princes Conti and Domb did not withstand the enemy attacks and fled.
January 21, 1596 was appointed to the post of Admiral of France , vacant after the death of the Marquis de Villars , and was dismissed from the post of colonel-general.
Participated in the siege of La Fere and Amiens , January 5, 1597 granted a knight of the Order of the Holy Spirit .
In September 1610, he was granted the title of Duke de Damville and Peer of France, registered by the Paris Parliament on December 30.
In honor of Admiral Damville, Canada’s colonizer Samuel de Champlain in 1603 named the highest waterfall in Quebec, Montmorency Falls .

Wife (1572): René de Cosse (died 10.1622), Countess de Segondiña, eldest daughter and principal heiress of Arthus de Cosse-Brissac , Count de Segondiñ, Marshal of France, and Françoise du Boucher. Childless marriage.
