GNU / Linux naming dispute

Operating systems based on the Linux kernel and GNU system libraries (and often other software) are traditionally called Linux. However, the GNU project (in particular, its founder Richard Stallman and his supporters) insist [1] on the name “GNU / Linux” [GNU Slash Linux] as a more accurate reflection of the state of affairs, since Linux often means an operating system that includes utilities from the GNU project [2] and the Linux kernel [3] .

Most distributions simply use the name “Linux” to refer to the operating system , although there are exceptions that support the position of the GNU project , such as Debian . In addition, one of the first distributions was called Yggdrasil Linux / GNU / X.

All or the vast majority of Linux desktop distributions are GNU / Linux distributions [4] , but with the popularization of "mobile" Linux-based OSs without the main libraries and programs of the GNU project (for example, Android or Firefox OS ), these OSes sometimes try to isolate continuing to call the "regular" Linux distributions. Views of the parties

The GNU project claims that it is necessary to use the term “GNU / Linux”, since GNU has existed for a long time, and the kernel, although important, is only part of a long-standing free operating system project [3] . The Free Software Foundation has for a long time been an alternative project to the kernel of the UNIX-like operating system Hurd , which, however, after the successful distribution of Linux went into a state of stagnation.

Richard Stallman said in an interview with ZNet in 2005: “Today, tens of millions use an operating system designed to have freedom, but they don’t know about it, because they think that this system is called Linux and is designed student “ for pleasure ”. ” [6]

Linus Torvalds , author of the Linux kernel , has always reacted poorly to Richard Stallman ’s insistent demands to support his position, claiming that he is engaged in software development, not politics [7] .
