The cap is 4-12 cm in diameter, sometimes up to 15 cm. At first it is convex, with time it becomes flat, the color is variable, varies from red-brown to gray-olive. Leg 5-10 cm high, cylindrical, golden yellow with red spots. The flesh is yellow, with a faint odor and a sweet taste, when pressed, it turns blue, and eventually blackens.
It grows in deciduous forests, especially under oaks and beeches, as well as in mixed and coniferous forests with spruce. Fruits in late summer and autumn. It occurs, as a rule, in groups. Distributed throughout Europe, in North Asia, North Africa, the eastern United States, and Central America.
Only young mushrooms are edible, but of poor quality. Adult mushrooms become bitter and unsuitable for consumption. Mushrooms are harvested in August and September.
