The freestyle wrestling competitions in the framework of the 1928 Olympic Welterweight Championship (up to 72 kilograms) were held in Antwerp on August 1, 1928 at the Power Sports Building .

16 athletes from 12 countries showed up for the competition. Only one representative could take part from each country, so the British Gardiner, Swede Pettersson, the Swiss Dunke and Neuenschwander did not participate in the competition; in addition, the declared Ivar Johansson decided to focus only on his performance in Greco-Roman wrestling, thus the title was played between 11 wrestlers.

There were no major international competitions in freestyle wrestling from the 1924 Olympic Games, so there were almost no favorites, with the exception of Arvo Haavisto , the bronze medalist of the previous Olympics in lightweight. He won the Olympic Games, winning all meetings. Second finalist Lloyd Appleton proved his strength by winning the tournament for second place. Third place went to Maurice Letchford, a Canadian retired in the semifinals.
