Publication History

Mr. Hyde first appeared in Journey into Mystery # 99 (December, 1963) and was created by screenwriter Stan Lee and artist Don Heck. Mr. Hyde was based on the eponymous character of the novel by Robert Lewis Stevenson .

He appeared as a minor character starting with Thunderbolts # 147 and continued to be a member of the team after the series was renamed Dark Avengers , starting with # 175.

Biography

Calvin Zabo was born in Trenton , New Jersey . He possessed an extremely unstable psyche, but at the same time he remained a brilliant biochemist obsessed with the idea of the influence of hormones on human physiology. Calvin's favorite book was Robert Lewis Stevenson's Strange Story of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde , and he believed that the experience described in the book was real. Zabo believed that with the help of hormonal drugs, the hidden potential of a person can be revealed. However, to set up such an experience, he needed the money he earned by robbing his employers. Zabo perfectly covered his tracks and remained uncaught. Once he tried to get to the hospital, where one of the doctors was Donald Blake , who refused him after learning about his past. Zabo got angry that Blake did not give him the position and vowed to take revenge on him. He designed the bioserum and set the experience on himself. As a result, he turned into a huge, Hulk-like creature and took the pseudonym Mr. Hyde. He found that the serum gave him superhuman abilities, as a result of which he could crush cars and tear steel sheets as if they were made of cardboard. Hyde set off in search of Blake, obsessed with revenge. Finding Blake, Calvin threw him out of the window, but he turned into

Torah and safely saved. Thor himself claimed that he allegedly saved Dr. Blake. Having heard about this on the radio, Mr. Hyde decided to fight Thor and provoked him by robbing a bank, using his superhuman strength to steal a bank safe. Because of Hyde’s impressive mass, people mistook him for Thor. When Thor (disguised as Donald Blake) and Jane Foster were on the street, they were abducted by Hyde at gunpoint. Under the guise of Blake, Thor was tied to a bomb that was supposed to explode 24 hours later, if it was not defused, but he escaped death. When trying to steal a submarine, Hyde was defeated and people realized that he was not Thor. Thor was forced to let him go because he thought Jane was still in danger. [2]

Hyde became a professional criminal and teamed up with Cobra to take revenge on their common enemy - Thor. Despite the fact that Thor lost his Mjolnir for a while, he still defeated both villains [3] . Along with Cobra, Mr. Hyde was subsequently hired by Loki to kidnap Jane Foster, after which they again fought Thor. To help them, Loki strengthened their powers. Loki sent Thor to the house where Jane was, full of many traps. Jane nearly died due to a blast. Thor managed to defeat both villains. Hyde and Cobra went to jail, while Foster was saved using the Asgard healing formula [4] . Soon Hyde and Cobra escaped from prison, but were caught and returned back to Daredevil [5] . They teamed up with Jester to take revenge, but were again defeated [6] . Together with Scorpio, Mr. Hyde fought against Captain America and the Falcon [7] . Once again teaming up with Cobra, Hyde tried to get Cagliostro serum [8] . While in prison, Hyde was taken under control by the Purple Man and would have been forced to fight Daredevil along with Cobra, Jester and the Gladiator [9] .

Tired of his constant failures, Cobra escaped from the island of Riker, having previously broken his partnership with Hyde [10] . Before the escape, the Cobra taunted him, which Hyde did not forgive. Mr. Hyde escaped and entered into an alliance with Batrok Jumper . Together with him, Batrock attempted to attempt extortion schemes against Manhattan. He fought against Captain America, but when Mr. Hyde decided to carry out his threat, which would kill thousands, Batrock, showing that there was a certain line that he did not cross, helped Captain against Hyde, saving the city. [11] Hyde tried to take revenge on Cobra, but Spider-Man stood in his way, who defeated him. [12] He was again imprisoned, but escaped being on Riker Island and fought against Spider-Man and the Black Cat during another assassination attempt on Cobra [13] . Later he again fought with Daredevil [14] .

Strengths and Abilities

Calvin Zabo mutated into Mr. Hyde as a result of the adoption of a chemical formula that was based on the idea of transforming the user through hormones [15] . In the form of Mr. Hyde, Zabo received superhuman powers (strength, body strength, endurance). Hyde's powers were so great that for a long time he fought on equal terms with the god of thunder, Thor. He easily tore the steel sheets in the bank [16] . Over the years, Zabo improved the serum, as a result of which he became stronger and stronger every year. To maintain his monstrous form, Hyde had to constantly take the formula. However, Calvin gets tired of Hyde's appearance, which is why he is returning to his true appearance. Serious injuries can also hinder transformation. He has a device that resembles a watch, which contains the formula. At the touch of a button, the formula immediately enters his bloodstream.

The formulas cause Mr. Hyde's skin to deform. Because of this, his face is distorted, which begins to resemble the makeup of Lon Cheney from the 1925 Phantom of the Opera film.

Like Calvin Zabo, he has extensive knowledge in the field of biochemistry and, despite the fact that everyone considers him crazy, Zabo is a brilliant scientist.

Initially, the character was simply called the “Doctor,” before his name was revealed in the episode “What They Became” [24] [25] . He is the father of Daisy Skye Johnson (performed by Chloe Bennett ). He changed his real name for personal reasons. Sky's mother and Cal's lover named Jayin ( Dichen Luckman ) is a Nonhumant with the ability to absorb life, which is why she does not age. In the past, it was experimented with by scientists from Hydra , led by Daniel Whitehall. Despite the fact that they pumped power from her and killed her, Cal managed to bring her back to life. Subsequently, the couple lost Daisy and searched for her for two decades. Since Cal, unlike Jayin and Daisy, did not freak out with the powers of Inhumans, he created a chemical formula that enhanced his physical abilities, while at the same time making him mentally unstable. Initially, Calvin teams up with Hydra to help him find Daisy, while he himself is thinking of killing Whitehall. When Phil Colson kills Whitehall in his place, Cal swears revenge on him. Ultimately, for his efforts to destroy S.I.T. Cal, Nelyud Gordon was moved to a place isolated from society. Some time later, he was reunited with his wife and daughter. When Jain tries to unleash a war between S.I.T.T. and Inhumans, she passes the first to Cal, who takes his serum, turning into Mr. Hyde. Nevertheless, Colson manages to reason with him and persuade him to his side. In the end, Cal is forced to kill Jain, saving Daisy. Then he was subjected to the program of T.A.I.T.I., wanting to become the good person he once was. His memory is erased, after which he becomes a veterinarian, Dr. Winslow, and opens his own clinic. Later, the US government creates a superpower serum for Jeffrey Mays on the basis of Mr. Hyde's serum, but with another, non-mind-affecting side effect on the heart muscle. Cal Johnson is the only scientist in the Marvel Cinematic Universe who has managed to create a very close analogue of Abraham Erskine's serum under artisanal conditions.
