Marena melovaya [2] ( lat. Rubia cretacea ) is a species of dicotyledon flowering plants of the genus Marin ( Rubia ) of the Marenov family ( Rubiaceae ). First described by the Russian botanist Antonina Ivanovna Poyarkova in 1958 [3] [4] .

Distribution and habitat
The endemic of Kazakhstan [6] , widespread in the Aral-Caspian region ( Mugodzhary , including in the Emba River , Ustyurt ) [7] .
It grows on the slopes of the chalk hills, in ravines [7] .
Botanical description
Perennial plant [7] .
The rhizome is usually strongly thickened in the upper part, branching, brownish-purple color [7] .
Stems are strong, straight, 25-80 cm high, few in number [7] .
The leaves are bare, glaucous, sinewy, gathered in whorls of 3-4 in each; the upper leaves are oblong-elliptic, the lower ones are lanceolate [7] .
Inflorescence terminal complex umbrella with a small amount of flowers with a yellowish corolla [7] .
Fruits are usually single-necked, black [7] .
It flowers from May to June, bears fruit in July and August [7] .
Environmental situation
Marena Cretaceous is listed in the Red Book of Kazakhstan; previously, the plant was also included in the Red Book of the USSR [2] .
