Tesnina Duldulatlagan - located on the Amu Darya river 2,056 km from its source and slightly higher than the Tyuya-Muyun gorge on the territory of southern Khorezm , consisting of hard exposed rocks of the mainland, characteristic of this region [1] . The length of the gorge is 1 km, and within its channel, the Amu Darya river narrows to 358 m (168 fathoms) [2] .
Tesnina is very famous among Khorezmians and has a number of names:
- Duldulatlagan (the place where Duldul jumped, the warhorse Aliya bin Abu Talib);
- Dahan-i-sher (mouth of a lion), which is mentioned in the XI century. Biruni in the Arabic translation "Famm El Asad" ( Arabic. فم الاسد ) [3] . This name is also widely known among the population of Khorezm in the form of "Dana-sher";
- Biruni cites the third name of this gorge “Sekr-es-shaitan” ( Arabic. ساکر الشیط ان ) - “dam of the devil” [3] . It is given in Biruni, like the previous one, in an Arabic translation and therefore it is difficult to restore its local folk name. It seems to us that “Sec-es-shaitan” is connected with the existing name “ Dzhygerbent ”, that is, the Dzhyger dam . The last word is interpreted by folk etymology as “liver” (in the figurative sense - native, soul, etc.). The true meaning of this word remains unclear [4] .
