Freestyle wrestling competitions in the framework of the 1928 Olympic lightweight champion (up to 58 kilograms) were held in Antwerp from July 30 to August 1, 1928 at the Power Sports Building .
16 athletes from 10 countries entered the competition. Only one representative could take part from each country, therefore Finn Ikonen, Briton Campbell, Swiss Hyun and Wiss, Americans Reed and Holding did not participate in competitions; Swede LindelΓΆf and Norwegian Martinsen did not show up (both took part in Greco-Roman wrestling competitions); thus the title was played between 10 wrestlers.
As such, there were no favorites, as there were no major international freestyle wrestling competitions from the 1924 Olympic Games. Kaarlo Myakinen , the silver medalist of past games, easily defeated all rivals and became the champion of the games. The competition was held according to the Bergwal system , and as a result, Edmon Spapen won the second place, having won two of the three meetings, and Jim Trifunov got the third place, who was lucky in the first round to lose Spapen (got into the group of fighters for second place), who in turn , in the next round I lost to future champion Kaarlo Myakinen (moved to the tournament for third place). In the tournament for third place, he remained, and won the battle for the bronze medal - losing only one meeting (in the first round) and winning only one (in the last round). If you compare with the result of the finalist Robert Hewitt, who remained below the line of winners, the result looks unfair. Hewitt took part in four meetings, two of them won, lost one to Kaarlo MΓ€kinen in the final, and the second in the tournament for second place to fresh Harold Sansum, who, like Trifunov, lost in the first round and moved on to the winner.
