It is the largest natural lake in Syria and the second body of water in area after the El Assad reservoir. In 2009, the reservoir covered about 100 km² and remained relatively stable. The salt plain that forms after drying out is quite wide and visible from space. A NASA image taken on September 5, 2002 shows that the lake was almost dry, leaving a white mark. The lake is a nesting place for birds, in particular flamingos .
Today, the lake is located in a drainage area , however, in the Pleistocene era , the lake basin formed a tributary of the Euphrates River. Al-Jabbul is usually filled with water in the spring. In summer and autumn, the water level decreases.
Usage
The lake basin is used for tourism, hunting for waterfowl . Nearby steppes serve as pasture for livestock. Salt is also mined on the lake. Al-Jabbul is the largest salt source in Syria.
