Amfiktion

Amphictyonia ( other Greek Ἀμφικτίων , or Ἀμφικτύων - from other Greek ἀμφι-κτίονες - residents of the surrounding areas, neighbors), or the Delphian union - the name of the union of Greek tribes who lived adjacent to the higher sanctuary, common to the sanctuary protection and general sacrifice.

Content

Description

Disputes arising between the members of the union were settled by the arbitral tribunal . The initial focus of amphythonia was the temple of Demeter in Anfela . After the “Holy War” , when the sanctuary in the region of Chrissa became independent (about 586 BC ), the Delphi became the second place of concentration, besides them the most famous amphicitons were the Calavrian and Delos Union . The desire of the Greeks to produce names from deities or heroes- eponyms gave the amphictions a special eponym - Amfiktion , the son of Deucalion .

Other values

The term “amphictyonia” in special literature has become widely used in biblical studies to refer to the totality of the Jewish tribes united by a common monotheistic cult ( XII - XI centuries BC ) [1] .
