The specific name is lat. amoenus means adorable.
Females on average 5% more than males. Total length 19.5-23 cm, tail 6.6-11 cm, hind feet 26-34 mm, ears 11-21 mm, weight 42-89 grams, weight of newborns 1.7-2.7 g. Coloring of fur from red to pink-cinnamon, 5 dark, usually black, stripes on the back, separated by four stripes of white or grayish color. The sides of the body and the underside of the tail are gray-yellow. Ears are blackish in front, whitish behind. The color of the belly and throat is white to cream. Winter fur is slightly duller than summer. Dental formula : incisors 1/1, fangs 0/0, premolars 2/1, molars 3/3, total 22 teeth.
The species is common in Canada (Alberta, British Columbia) and the USA (California, Idaho, Montana, Nevada, Oregon, Utah, Washington, Wyoming). It lives in forests (prefers conifers), as well as in thickets, transition zones, meadows at an altitude of up to 3000 meters above sea level.
Leads a solitary daily lifestyle, with the exception of the breeding season, which lasts from late April to early May. Like all chipmunks, individuals of this species spend most of their time scratching or digging the ground, and then washing themselves. Their movements are intermittent. They feed on seeds, tubers, plants, mushrooms, insects. They may also consume roots, small mammals, or bird eggs. They can look for food on earth and on trees. Make food supplies for the winter. Natural enemies: coyote , long-tailed weasel , American badger , red lynx , goshawk , kestrel , green rattlesnake .
The female builds a nest of leaves, grass, feathers and lichens. It is located in a hole at a depth of about 1.5 m or high on a tree. After 30 days of pregnancy, she gives birth to 3-8 cubs. Feeding lasts six weeks. Young chipmunks become independent at the age of 8 to 12 weeks. Puberty occurs at the age of about 12 to 23 months. Life expectancy of 5 years.
