Porter Crater ( lat. Porter ), not to be confused with the Porter Crater on Mars , is a large ancient impact crater in the southern hemisphere of the visible side of the Moon . The name was given in honor of the American engineer and amateur astronomer Russell Williams Porter (1871-1949) and approved by the International Astronomical Union in 1970. The formation of the crater dates back to the nectar period [1] .

Crater Description
Crater Porter is located in the north-eastern part of the shaft of the Clavius Crater. Other nearby neighbors of the crater are Longomontan Crater in the northwest; Magini Crater in the north-northeast; Crater Deluc in the east and Crater Rutherford in the south [3] . The selenographic coordinates of the center of the crater are , diameter 51.5 km [4] , depth 4940 m [5] .
Porter Crater is close to a circular shape and significantly destroyed. The shaft is flattened, the eastern part of the shaft is straightened, and the shaft has a minimum height in the southwestern part. The inner slope is uneven in width; it has a ledge in the northern part. The northwestern part of the inner slope is marked by a noticeable bowl-shaped crater. The shaft height above the surrounding area reaches 1130 m [1] , the volume of the crater is approximately 2100 km³ [1] . The bottom of the bowl is crossed in the eastern and northern parts, the south-western part of the bowl is flat. The double central peak is somewhat offset southwest of the center of the bowl.
Before receiving its own name in 1970, the crater was designated Klaviy B (in the designation of the so-called satellite craters located in the vicinity of a crater with its own name).
