Test vessel

A typical vessel is a specially equipped vessel intended for carrying out experiments , tests and experiments related to the vessel itself, be it testing new types of weapons, experiments with a power plant, researching new types of propulsion , hull forms, individual structural components of the vessel.

Unlike research vessels engaged in the study of the Earth, water masses, biomass, bottom, atmosphere and outer space, which serve as a research tool, the experimental vessel itself is the object of study .

Test surface ships

As a rule, experimental vessels are converted from vessels and ships of existing types. Occasionally they are built specifically for a special project. In the Russian imperial fleet, the gunboat with the speaking name " Experience " became the first ship with armored protection.

In the Soviet fleet, the experimental vessels carried the designation "OS- <number>" and, due to the possibility of year-round operation, were concentrated mainly on the Black Sea Fleet . At different times, it consisted of at least 15 different experimental vessels, organizationally related to auxiliary ships [1] . In particular, they included Dixon and Foros , converted for testing ship laser systems, as well as several specialized ships of projects 1236 and 1824, designed to test torpedo weapons.

Experimental submarines

Among the submarines, one can also find trial ships:

  • Russian Postal (1906) and Soviet R-1 (S.92, "REDO") were used to develop a single internal combustion engine for underwater travel.
  • USS Albacore (AGSS-569) - American experimental submarine (1953), which served as a training ground for the development of hull forms, rudders, propulsion characteristics of submarines. In the Soviet Navy, its analogue was the SS-533 boat of project 01710 Mackerel.
  • B-90 “Sarov” is a Russian experimental submarine (2007), built to test various types of weapons and equipment.

In fact, some combat submarines built on individual projects and participating in an extensive test program can also be referred to pilot vessels.

  • German boats of the XVII type designed by Helmut Walter, the Soviet S-99 (1951) and the British-German HMS Meteorite (1946) served to test a steam-gas-turbine power plant ,
  • K-3 "Leninsky Komsomol" and USS Nautilus (SSN-571) were used to study submarines with a nuclear reactor.
  • K-27 (1962) and USS Swordfish (SSN-579) (1958) carried experimental liquid metal coolant reactors;
  • K-278 Komsomolets (198x) was used to carry out deep-sea tests;
  • K-222 (1969) became a testing ground for the use of titanium alloys and the operation of high-speed submarines.
