Biography
Born in a farm family. Both of his parents were under the charm of classical antiquity, and he himself received a name in honor of the ancient Greek poet.
He studied at the University of British Columbia , where he received a bachelor's degree with honors (1925) and a first-class master's degree with honors (1927) in classical art. He received his Ph.D. in archeology from the University of Michigan in 1929. In the same year, he became a scholarship holder for new excavations of the Athenian agora of the American School of Classical Studies in Athens, which began in 1931, and participated in them annually before the outbreak of war in 1939. In 1933-41 Assistant Professor of Classical Archeology at the University of Toronto . Since 1939, he volunteered to serve in the Royal Canadian Navy , was an intelligence officer.
Since 1947, professor of classical archeology at the Institute for Advanced Studies; since 1977, he has been emerit. In 1949 he resumed excavations in Athens.
The author of five books.
Has been married since 1934 to Dorothy Burr Thompson , three daughters.
Member of the British Academy (1948), member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences (1957). Honorary Doctor of Princeton, Athens, Lyon, Freiburg, New York, Paris and other universities. Honorary Citizen of Athens.
