Chipmunk Townsend

Chipmunk Townsend [1] ( lat. Tamias townsendii ) - a species of rodents of the squirrel family. The species name is given in honor of the American naturalist John Kirk Townsend (1809-1851) [2] .

Females on average 3-4% more than males. Total length 234-286 mm, tail 103-130 mm, hind feet 32-40 mm, ears 17-23 mm, weight 65-89 grams, weight of newborns 3-4 g.

The color of the top is light or dark orange-brown, on the back there are 5 dark stripes separated by four orange stripes. The color of the belly and throat is white to cream. The top of the tail is silvery blackish gray, the lower part of the tail is bright orange. Winter fur is darker than summer. The species is common in Canada (British Columbia) and the USA (Oregon, Washington). It lives in forests with a lush crown and dense thickets.

Natural enemies are weasels, minks, lynxes. This species has a diverse diet, consisting of seeds, nuts, fruits, insects, roots, herbs, mushrooms. It feeds mainly on land, but sometimes on trees. Stores food in the hole. It usually remains active from at least March to the end of November. Active all winter in warmer areas, especially along the coast.

There is one offspring per year, pregnancy lasts about four weeks, the average brood size is 3-8. Cubs appear above the ground in July. Life expectancy is seven years.
