Career

University and lower league appearances

Wilson attended Hurricane High School in Hurricane ( West Virginia ), in which he won the state championship in 2002. After graduating from school, he enrolled at Winthrop University . In the summer of 2007, he underwent surgery for Tommy John [2] . In January 2008, he moved to Texas A&M University . At the 2008 Major League Baseball Draft, he was selected in the tenth round by the Chicago Cubs , but the team did not sign a contract with him. The following year, he was again selected by draft , but this time in the second round by the Boston Red Sox club. After spending several years in the lower leagues, in November 2012, to save the pitcher from getting into Rule 5 Draft , the Red Sox transferred him to their main squad [3] .

Boston Red Sox

On March 16, 2013, Wilson was transferred to the Potaket Red Sox AAA club, but on April 7 he was returned to the main squad due to John Lecky's injury and on April 11 he made his debut in Major League Baseball. During the 2013 season, he was transferred several times to the farm system and returned to the main club. The next two years, he also played in Boston, then in the lower leagues. So in 2013 he won 23 2 ⁄ 3 innings for the Red Sox, for which his ERA was 4.88. In 2014, his indicators improved significantly and for 28 1 ⁄ 3 inning his ERA was only 1.91.

Detroit Tigers

On December 11, 2014, the Red Sox exchanged Wilson, along with Gabe Spier and Jonis Cespedas, at the Detroit Tigers for Rick Porsello. [3]

May 27, 2015, Alex Wilson, for the first time in his career, took the position of starting pitcher in the Major League Baseball match. In the game against Oakland Athletics , he spent 3 dry innings, throwing 52 innings, and his team, in the end, won with a score of 3: 2.

On July 30, 2015, Wilson, having played his last five strikeouts in the Tigers match against Baltimore Orioles , in which Detroit was in the lead with a score of 9: 8, recorded a save in his account for the first time in his career [4] .

On November 30, 2018, the Tigers did not renew the contract with Wilson and, thus, he became a free agent [5] .

Game Style

Wilson mainly uses three types of innings: fast-sim fastball with an average speed of 92 miles per hour, to-sim fastball with a speed of 91-92 miles per hour and a slider with a speed of 84-86 miles per hour. Wilson himself calls his to-sim fastball cutter, but statistical agencies count as to-sims. He also occasionally throws curvball and changjap [6] .
