Biography
Vasily Stepanovich Kretov was born into a working family in the village of Altukhovo (now - the Navlinsky district of the Bryansk region ). In 1935 he graduated from the 4th grade of the school. He worked as an assistant carpenter in a furniture factory in Altukhovo.
In August 1941, the Navlinsky district military enlistment office of the Oryol region was drafted into the ranks of the Red Army . On the fronts of World War II since September 1941.
In the battle for the liberation of Sevastopol on May 8, 1944, near the village of Balaklava, the second issue of machine-gun calculation, the Red Army soldier Kretov replaced the machine gunner who had fallen out of their ranks and suppressed 2 firing points and up to 25 enemy soldiers and officers. By order of 227 rifle divisions, he was awarded the Order of Glory of the 3rd degree.
The commander of the anti-tank rifle division, Sergeant Kretov, on December 9, 1944, in the battles for the settlements of Chan and Hort in the Heves of Hungary in his own army , with his own calculation, destroyed 10 enemy soldiers and suppressed machine-gun and mortar points. By order of the 7th Guards Army of January 9, 1945, he was awarded the Order of Glory of the 2nd degree.
The commander of the anti-tank rifle squad, Sergeant Kretov, February 10, 1945 in the battle for the village of Lithuania southeast of Prague with his fire supported the infantry, suppressing the enemy firing points. During the reflection of the enemy’s counterattack, he took his place behind the easel machine gun and tore it down with well-aimed fire. In this battle, being himself wounded, he replaced the failed platoon commander and was the first to attack. By a decree of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR of May 15, 1946, he was awarded the Order of Glory of the 1st degree.
Sergeant Kretov was demobilized in December 1945. He returned to his homeland. He again worked in a furniture factory.
On April 6, 1985, in commemoration of the 40th anniversary of the Victory, he was awarded the Order of the Patriotic War of the 1st degree .
Vasily Stepanovich Kretov died on May 1, 1989.
