Viikate

The group was founded in 1996 by the singing guitarist Kaarle Viikate (real name Kalle Virtanen) and drummer Simeoni Viikate (real name Simo Kairistola) at the Ilosaarirock rock festival , which takes place annually in Joensuu . The musicians recorded their first mini-albums Vaiennut soitto and Roudasta Rospuuttoon on the Syyslevyt label, but in 1999 signed a contract with Ranka Recordings . The first full-length album, Noutajan valssi, was released in 2000. In 2005, guitarist Arvo Viikate (real name Ari Tayminen) and bass player Ervo Viikate (real name Erkka Koskinen) joined the group. At the moment, the discography of the group has 8 full-length albums, 8 minions and 16 singles.

The group performs mainly in Finland, but there were performances outside it, in particular in Tallinn as part of the Naapurivisa festival ^[1] and in St. Petersburg as part of the Ilosaarirock festival tour ^[2] .

Most of the group’s songs are calm lyrical melodies, escorting to extreme gloom. However, in the latest albums there are also heavy compositions with hard guitar riffs and a powerful rhythm section. The themes of songs are from lost hope to sad family holidays. Finnish folk music and the work of Finnish singers of the 1950s , primarily Reynao Helismaa and Tapio Rautavaara , as well as the music of Finnish groups Lyijykomppania , Mana Mana , Lapinlahden Linnut and The Agents, had a huge influence on the style of the group. All lyrics are exclusively in Finnish . In their homeland, the group is very popular.
