Biography

Karl Gippius was born in 1832 (or 1833); the youngest son of a portrait painter, lithographer and painting teacher Gustav Adolf Gippius , who taught his son from an early age in creative disciplines.

He was educated at the Imperial Academy of Arts , which he graduated in 1855 with the title of free artist , after which he undertook a trip abroad at his own expense. Upon returning to Russia, Karl Gustavovich Gippius received in 1857 the place of architect and artist at the Trans-Caspian Trade Society and built trade barns in Astrabad and Baku .

In 1859, he joined the General Directorate of the Caucasian Governor. His studies in Shamakhi after the earthquake that same year served as the basis for the transfer of the provincial center from Shemakhi to Baku, while Gippius was appointed in 1865 with the rank of provincial secretary to the position of Baku provincial and city architect. Baku owes a great deal of its external accomplishment to him: he settled the streets and squares, built a stone embankment and the governor's houses (1867), noble families and many private houses located on it, arranged three city fountains. He defended the inviolability of the Khan's palace when it was suggested that he would be adapted to prison.

"For excellent, diligent service" on January 6, 1868, at the request of the governor of the Caucasus, Grand Duke Mikhail Nikolaevich , he was awarded the Order of St. Stanislav of the 3rd degree.

In May 1868, Gippius was appointed Erivan Provincial Architect. In Erivan, they built a prison and a bridge on the Araks River . A few years later he lost the clarity of vision of one eye, and the local climate adversely affected his health (he was diagnosed with a dry spinal cord). In 1870, he was introduced by the Novorossiysk and Bessarabian Governor-General to the post of Kherson provincial architect, but the appointment did not take place. By decree of the Governing Senate on October 6, 1871 No. 219, the college secretary, Erivan provincial architect Karl Gippius was promoted to senior adviser , with seniority from March 1, 1870, during his seniority. In 1871, Gippius retired and went to St. Petersburg for treatment. Here Gippius was engaged in private buildings and was the architect of the Moscow Fire Insurance Society and the Noble Assembly .

He died on August 22 ( September 3 ), 1880 from a broken heart, and was, according to the Russian Biographical Dictionary, buried in the Smolensk Cemetery, but the Petersburg Necropolis does not mention him, but only his brother Otto [1] .

K. G. Gippius was also an excellent watercolor painter and constantly painted types and monuments of architecture, but he did not attach importance to his works and willingly handed out to his friends. His widow preserved an album of views of the Echmiadzin monastery, compiled by him during his service in Erivan.
