Career
In the 2002 NHL draft, he was selected in round 1 under a common 25 number by the Carolina Hurricanes team.
Hockey started playing in a club in one of the lower leagues. Despite this, the goalkeeper continued to play in the previous team for another two years, and before the 2004/05 season he was transferred to the Carolina Farm Club.
Ward debuted in the NHL on October 5, 2005 in a match against Tampa . Then the young goalkeeper replaced the injured Martin Gerber and repelled 10 shots from 11, but his team lost with a score of 2: 5.
During the 2005/06 season , Ward was finally transferred to the Carolina , which managed to break into the playoffs. In the first round, “Hurricanes” had to meet with “ Montreal ”. In these matches, Gerber did not act very well, which prompted the head coach of “ Carolina ” Peter Lavioletta to entrust the place at the gate to Ward. The young Canadian took full advantage of this opportunity, confidently playing in all matches until the final. As a result, Carolina won the Stanley Cup, and Ward became the first freshman goalkeeper after Patrick Roy to succeed. At the end of that season, the Canadian goalkeeper received the Conn Smythe Trophy - a prize awarded to a hockey player who has proven himself better than others in the NHL playoff games.
In the 2007/08 season, Ward played 69 games in which he conceded 180 goals and his team failed to qualify for the playoffs .
On December 26, 2011, in the match against New Jersey Devils , in the last seconds of the third period Ilya Kovalchuk sent the puck into his own empty net, the goal was recorded on Ward, as the last Carolina player who touched the puck. Thus, he became the tenth goalkeeper in the history of the NHL , who managed to score a goal [1] .
After 13 years with Carolina in the summer of 2018, the club did not renew the goalkeeper's contract, and Ward, as an unlimited free agent, signed a one-year contract with Chicago Blackhawks for $ 3 million.
On August 28, 2019, he completed his playing career by signing a symbolic contract with Carolina for 1 day. [2]
International Career
As part of the Canadian national team, Ward could make his debut at the 2006 Olympics . The goalkeeper was included in the extended list of candidates for a trip to Turin, but remained overboard. However, the very next year he won the world title .
