Career

Gustav Toni was born in northern Italy in the municipality of Stelvio . From an early age he was engaged in various ski species.

He made his World Cup debut on December 11, 1969 in Val d'Isere and immediately won his first race ( giant slalom ). In this discipline, a nineteen-year-old Italian dominated throughout the season, which allowed him to win a small crystal globe in the classification of giant slalom and become the third in the overall classification. At the first world championship in his career, which took place in Val Garden, the Italian came down in giant slalom, but in slalom he was not enough for a medal and he became the fourth.

In the 1970/71 season, the twenty-year-old Italian not only defended the title of best in giant slalom, but also became second in the standings of special slalom, which allowed him to win the overall world cup standings.

A year later, Tuni again won the overall standings and the standings of slalom, and also made his debut at the Olympics . In the giant slalom, he won the gold medal, became the second in slalom. According to FIS rules, these medals are also counted as World Championship medals. Gustav also received a gold medal according to the results of a non-Olympic combination, which was not a separate race, but the sum of the achievements in the other three types.

According to the results of the post-Olympic season, Tony won a large crystal globe for the third time in a row. In 1974, he won both technical disciplines at the World Championships in St. Moritz . In the 1974/75 season, the Italian won the World Cup for the fourth and last time in the overall standings.

During the opening of the 1976 Olympics, Gustav Thoney carried the Italian flag at the opening ceremony, and also won silver in slalom, and in fourth place in giant slalom, losing in the fight for bronze to less than 0.3 against Ingemaru Stenmarku . But once again, the Italian became the champion in the standings of the combination.

In January 1977, Thoney won his last career victory, becoming the best in the combination in Wengen . In 1980, the second time he was the standard-bearer of the Italian team at the opening of the Games, but he did not fight for high places, he played only in slalom , where he took eighth place. After the Olympics, he completed an active career.

After completing his career, he switched to coaching, was the personal trainer of the legendary Alberto Tomba , then he was the head coach of the entire Italian team. Gustav Thoney currently runs a family hotel in his hometown.
