Whirlwind ( Spanish La Vorágine ) is a novel by Colombian writer José Eustacio Rivera , written in 1924. The novel takes place in the jungles of Colombia during the time of the Rubber Fever .

The novel tells about the adventures of Arturo Cova and his mistress Alicia, their escape from Bogota in order to make a secret marriage, the path through the plains, and later - through the tropical forests of Colombia.

Rivera gives a description of the labor of workers in rubber plants, as well as the terrain and environment of forests in northern South America.

The novel is full of metaphors and grooves in the small components of what is happening, which allow the reader to imagine and appreciate the landscape of virgin rainforests.

The Whirlwind is notable for being considered the progenitor of Latin American modernism. and one of the most famous novels written in Colombia.
