Dieter Zetsche ( German: Dieter Zetsche ̩ [diːtɐ ˈt͜sɛt͡ʃə] ; born May 5, 1953 in Istanbul , Turkey ) is a German businessman, former chairman of the board of the transnational concern Daimler AG , head of Mercedes-Benz Cars (2006 to 2019) and member of the board Directors (from December 16, 1998 to May 22, 2019) [5] . Since 2010 he has been living in the commune of Lierna , Lake Como, where he purchased a villa [6] .

Biography
Dieter Zetsche was born on May 5, 1953 in Istanbul , Turkey. His father, Herbert Zetsche, by profession and civil engineer in 1953, was temporarily in Turkey for the construction of the dam . The family returned to Germany in 1956. Dieter Zetsche attended school in Oberursel (near Frankfurt ), then studied electrical engineering from 1971 to 1976 at the University of Karlsruhe [5] .
He graduated as an engineer. In 1976, Dieter joined the Daimler-Benz concern, worked in the research department. In 1981, he became assistant development manager for vehicle manufacturing. Dieter completed his doctorate in 1982 at the University of Paderborn [5] .
Zetsche became a member of the board of directors of DaimlerChrysler in 1998 and served as president of the Chrysler Group from mid-2000 to December 31, 2005. From January 1, 2006, Dieter accepted the offer of DaimlerChrysler CEO Jürgen Schremp to become chairman of DaimlerChrysler (later Daimler AG ), leaving the position of CEO of Chrysler Group.
On September 26, 2018, according to the Charter of Daimler AG, which determines the need for rotation of managers, Dr. Zetsche announced his resignation, which was carried out on May 22, 2019. After leaving the post of the head of the company, Zetsche took the honorary post of chairman of the supervisory board [7] .
Dieter was included by Time magazine in 2006 in the list of 100 most influential people of the year [8] .
Interesting Facts
Carrying out extremely effective management of the Chrysler Group company and gaining respect among staff at all levels, he received the nickname Doctor Zed (Dr Z or Doctor Zee). The main reason for this was the Employee Prising Plus incentive system introduced by him on July 1, 2006. The nickname Dr Z was used in the Ask Dr. advertising campaign. Z (Ask Dr. Zed) in North America, in which Dieter Zetsche answered potential buyers' questions in English, but with a strong German accent [9] .
On May 22, 2019, on the day Dieter Zetsche resigned as head of Daimler AG, the competing automobile company BMW AG released a video dedicated to Dieter on its official video channel. The video, which lasts about a minute, demonstrates how Zetsche leaves the company’s office on the last day of work, says goodbye to the staff, gets into a Mercedes-Benz limo waiting for him and leaves for home. At home, saying goodbye to the driver, Dieter enters the house, goes into the garage, from which the BMW i8 Roadster leaves the car. The video ends with the words "Thank you, Dieter Zetsche, for many years of inspiring competition ..." [10]
