Song History
The inspiration for writing music was the jingle , which precedes the announcement of the French railway company SNCF . David recorded it on his iPhone at Aix-en-Provence station, when he visited friends in Provence and used it as a sample [1] [2] . When he called the author, the French composer Michael Bumendil, he did not believe the call, mistaking it for a rally [3] .
The text was written by Gilmore's wife, Polly Samson . She was inspired by the second book of John Milton's Lost Paradise [1] .
The Liberty Choir also took part in the song, where in addition to professional vocalists, seven former prisoners from the Wandsworth Prison in London sang [1] . In 2011, Gilmore’s adopted son Charlie, Polly’s son, spent four months in this prison. David said: “Charlie’s experience influenced us and made us learn more about the British prison system. He also made me wonder if we can personally do something to improve the condition of prisoners and their rehabilitation. We have become part of a useful initiative and hope that our example will inspire others ” [4] .
David and Polly donated money to support the choir. Thanks to their participation, Liberty Choir restarted his site. Star spouses assured that their charitable foundation will continue to help with funding. They also expressed hope for expanding the list of prisons involved in such rehabilitation [4] .
The song "Rattle That Lock" was the first song from the album to be aired. This happened July 17, 2015 on BBC Radio 2 in the program The Chris Evans Breakfast Show [1] . The single became available for digital download immediately after that [1] [5] .
On August 3, 2015, BBC Radio 2 made “Rattle That Lock” their Record of the Week, which guaranteed that the song would be performed at least once a day.
