Vasiliev Yuri Mikhailovich ( February 23, 1924 , Syzran - December 10, 1973 , Moscow ) - oil geologist, doctor of geological and mineralogical sciences, professor, participant in the Great Patriotic War, head of the department of geology (1968-1973) and vice-rector for academic affairs (1968— 1973) at the Moscow Research Institute I.M. Gubkin.

Biography
- February 23, 1924 - in the city of Syzran, Samara region, Yuri Mikhailovich Vasiliev was born in the family of a railway employee.
- 1942 - Graduated with honors from Syzran High School.
- 1942-1945 - Member of the Great Patriotic War. He served in the 9th Guards Kovensko-Koenigsberg mortar brigade, first as a gun’s number, then as a gunner and unit commander, and took part in the battles of the North West, West and 3rd Belorussian fronts. He was awarded two medals "For Courage". He finished the war in East Prussia. He has medals "For the victory over Germany in the Great Patriotic War", "For the capture of Koenigsberg."
- 1945-1951 - Studying at the Moscow Petroleum Institute (MNI) them. I.M. Gubkin. He graduated with honors, enrolled in graduate school.
- 1947-1950 - In parallel with his studies, he worked in the Union Geological Search Bureau of the USSR Ministry of Petroleum Industry as a collector, foreman, and geologist.
- 1951-1954 - Studying at the graduate school of the Moscow Polytechnic Institute I.M. Gubkin.
- 1950-1954 - Work in the All-Union Aerogeological Trust of the Ministry of Geology and Mineral Resources of the USSR as head of the geological party, and since 1951, as chief geologist of the expedition.
- 1954 - At the end of the graduate school, he defended a dissertation on the topic "History of the tectonic development of the southeastern part of the Caspian Basin in connection with its oil content." Enrolled as an assistant in the Department of General Geology of the Moscow Petroleum Institute.
- 1956-1958 - Chief geologist of the integrated oil geological expedition, then head of the Caspian gas and oil expedition of the Moscow Oil Research Institute named after I. M. Gubkin (part-time).
- 1960 - Elected to the post of assistant professor of the Department of Geology.
- 1961 - Awarded the medal "For Labor Distinction."
- 1961 - On the initiative of Yu. M. Vasiliev and the head of the department prof. M. M. Charygin adopted Decree of the Council of Ministers of the USSR No. 828 of 09/11/61, "On Measures for the Implementation of the Drilling of Experimental Ultra-Deep Wells." The Department of Geology is entrusted with the organization of geological processing of materials of superdeep wells Aralsor and Biikzhal.
- 1964 - Defense of the dissertation for the degree of Doctor of Geological and Mineralogical Sciences on the topic "Geology and patterns of oil and gas distribution in the bowels of the Caspian Basin." Since 1965, professor at the Department of General Geology.
- 1967 - Member of the International Gas Congress in Hamburg.
- 1968 - Publication of the textbook "General and Historical Geology" in collaboration with Professor M. M. Charygin
- 1968 - Awarding the title of laureate of the Prize to them. I. M. Gubkin for his work “Geology and oil and gas prospects of the Aral-Caspian region”.
- 06/27/1968 - Appointed Vice-Rector of the Institute.
- 1970 - Awarding the title of laureate of the Prize to them. I. M. Gubkin for his work “The Geological Structure of the Caspian Depression and the Laws of the Distribution of Oil and Gas in its Deposits.
- 1971 - Awarded the Order of the Red Banner of Labor.
- 1971-1972 - Work on the textbook “General and Historical Geology” (co-authored with Prof. M. S. Arabadzhi and V. S. Milnychuk). The textbook was published in Russian in 1977, and in Spanish in 1981.
- 12/10/1973 After a serious illness, Yuri Mikhailovich Vasiliev untimely passed away. He was buried in Moscow at the Vostryakovsky cemetery.
