Biography
Born in the family of a famous journalist, Ph.D. Johannes Wickmann. In 1948 he received a law degree in Stockholm and in 1953 he received a degree in philosophy and economics, this period he worked at the Institute for Economic Research (1951). In the 1940s organized a literary group, wrote poetry and essays.
In 1960 he was appointed head of the bureau, served as secretary of the parliamentary committee for supervision of the Bank of Sweden and public debt (bankoutskottet) (1953-1958). In 1959 he was appointed Deputy Minister of Finance.
- 1962-1967 - Deputy General Director of the mining company LKAB,
- 1964-1967 - Member of the Board of the Bank of Sweden ,
- 1967-1969 - Minister without a portfolio in the Ministry of Finance, responsible, inter alia, for food policy,
- 1969-1971 - Minister of Industry, in this position established supervision of unprofitable industrial enterprises,
- 1971-1973 - Minister of Foreign Affairs of Sweden. In this post, during parliamentary debates in March 1972, he supported East German policy of German Chancellor Willy Brandt and expressed concern about the increased bombardment in Vietnam. He also ruled out the possibility of Swedish EEC membership due to the country's neutrality, which was criticized by conservative leader Jöste Boman. In December 1972, diplomatic relations were established with the GDR, in 1973 with the DPRK.
- 1973-1976 - Chairman of the Bank of Sweden.
In 1975 he was elected a full member of the Royal Academy of Engineering Sciences. He was also the chairman of the Swedish Film Institute (1963-1967).
