Museum History
The museum was created in 1946, when two former military museums, the Artillery Museum (founded in 1860) and the Quartermaster Museum (created in 1928) were united under the name Hærmuséet - Army Museum. At first the museum was open only to military personnel, and in 1978 it was opened to the public by King Olav V under the name Museum of the Armed Forces.
The museum is located inside Akershus fortress , but outside the walls of the fortress’s inner bastion, in one of the old military arsenals from the 1860s.
The purpose of the museum and its exposition
The main goal of the museum is to show Norwegian military history from the time of the Vikings to the present.
On the way, before entering the museum building, a part of the museum exhibits is placed: artillery pieces, trunks of old cannons, tanks.
The museum consists of six departments:
- Ancient times and military history from the time of the Vikings to 1814.
- Military history from 1814 to 1905.
- Military history from 1905 to 1940.
- Ground battles of the Second World War from 1940 to 1945.
- Naval battles of World War II from 1940 to 1945.
- After the Second World War - military history from 1945 to the present.
The museum is very interesting in that the expositions are beautifully selected - mannequins are used in the uniform of the military of the corresponding times; a large number of small arms, guns and equipment next to mannequins; compositions with mannequins, military equipment were created (for example, the Germans ride a motorcycle and the Norwegian resistance arrows are waiting); mock fortresses and battles; and so on. There are quite interesting exhibits - for example, a ski gun, a howitzer designed and manufactured in Norway, the Norwegian uniform of different times and military branches, and other exhibits.
In addition, there are periods of special exhibitions.
In addition to promoting the military history of Norway (especially for school groups), as a main mission, the museum is the country's main military museum.
