- Silicon reaction with an excess of molten rubidium in an argon atmosphere (followed by distillation of unreacted rubidium in a vacuum):

Rubidium silicide forms dark shiny crystals of cubic syngony , space group P 4 3m , cell parameters a = 1.304 nm, Z = 32, structure like potassium germanide .
Self-igniting in air.
