Theodor Betins was born in “Bētiņi”, Jaunberz parish, in a large family. He studied at the Jelgava School. He worked as an official in the Riga Board, later in the insurance company "Anchor". He started farming in 1891. In his garden, he grew a large number of so little known varieties of apple and pear trees suitable for the Latvian climate.

In 1910, he received a gold medal at the Riga Gardening Exhibition. Awarded the Order of the Three Stars 4 degrees.
