Salvador Silvester del Rosario Jovellanos Guanes ( Spanish: Salvador Silvester del Rosario Jovellanos Guanes , December 31, 1833 - February 11, 1881 ) - Paraguayan politician and statesman, President of Paraguay. One of the founders of the party of Colorado .

Biography

Born in 1833 in Asuncion . Even when he was a child, the family emigrated to Argentina, and therefore he grew up in Buenos Aires . There he became a member of the Paraguayan Association formed by emigrants, and during the Paraguayan War he participated in the formation of the Paraguayan Legion from Paraguayan immigrants, who fought on the side of the Triple Alliance against Paraguay.

After the Brazilian forces occupied the capital of Paraguay in 1869, Hovelanos returned to the country along with a number of other prominent emigrants and took part in the formation of new authorities loyal to the victors. He became a member of the National Assembly, participated in the development of the Constitution, during the presidency of Cyrilo Rivarola, he served as Minister of War, Minister of the Navy, Minister of the Interior. On January 7, 1871, after the death of Vice President Cayo Miltos, he was elected the new Vice President of the country.

 
Changing the borders of Paraguay after the Paraguay war

After President Rivarola resigned, Hovelanos, as Vice President, took over the post of President of the country on December 18, 1871. He had to settle the difficult internal political situation, as well as conduct long negotiations with the countries that defeated Paraguay during the war. Under him, a peace and border treaty was signed with Brazil and Uruguay.

At the end of his presidency, he left for Argentina. Died in Buenos Aires.
