Son of Jacques de Montmorency and Philippi de Melun.
He inherited his father at the age of 12, and at first managed his possessions under the care of his mother.
After the signing of the Treaty of Troy on May 2, 1420 , he left his lands at the mercy of the British and the Burgundians, and went to the Dauphin for the Loire. In 1422 he married Jeanne de Vosse, who inherited the lord of Vosse, Nivelles and other possessions in the Netherlands.
In 1425, the king rewarded him for his loyalty to the post of the great chamberlain of France, but two years later he handed it over to his favorite, Georges de La Tremaux . July 6, 1429 participated in the coronation of Charles VII in Reims . After this, Henry VI confiscated his lands in Ильle-de-France, Brie and Normandy, and the charters issued on September 10, 1429 in Vernon, handed them over to Jean de Luxembourg , the bastard de Saint-Paul.
At the end of August of the same year, Jean de Montmorency participated in an attempt by Jeanne d'Arc to seize Paris , distinguished himself in a battle for the passage to the gates of Saint-Honoré, which lasted for a whole day, and ended in a victory for the French, and was knighted on the battlefield . Due to the lack of supplies, the siege of the capital ended in failure.
In the campaign of 1430, the French achieved some success in the Paris Basin, and in April the Baron regained the rank of Montmorency.
In 1437, accompanied the king in the campaign, which ended with the capture of Montero and Pontoise . In subsequent years, the new successes of the French troops allowed Montmorency to regain the rest of possession.
At the end of the war, Baron, widowed in 1431, married Margarita d'Orgemon for the second time. The sons of the first marriage came into conflict with the stepmother, and then with her father, who took her side. During the war, the League of Public Benefit , in which the baron supported the king, his sons were on the side of the rebels. Enraged, Jean deprived them of their inheritance and the act of July 24, 1463 in the Hunting Castle, located in the heart of the forest of Montmorency , bequeathed all of their lands to his son from his second marriage. Louis XI approved this donation on October 28, 1472. Jean and Louis left the lands inherited from his mother.
Soon the king, dissatisfied with the power of Montmorency, found a way to humiliate him. Louis banned the hunt to all his subjects without distinction of classes, but the baron, being a passionate hunter, ignored this prohibition. Once the king came to him for lunch, and after eating he ordered to collect all the hunting equipment of Montmorency and burn it in his presence. Baron had to swallow an insult.
