Biography
The son of Mathieu IV de Montmorency and Jeanne de Levy.
Little is known about the life of this lord. He is mentioned with his father in a document dated August 5, 1303, containing a list of lords who accompanied Philip IV the Beautiful on a campaign in Flanders; perhaps he participated in the battle of Mons-en-Pevel the following year.
In 1305/1306 he inherited his childless elder brother Mathieu V. In October 1309, he granted Dominican monks from Argentine , called the Jacobins, a vineyard located next to their possessions.
He sued for the inheritance of Jeanne de Chantilly, the widow of her older brother, with her second husband Jean de Guin, Viscount de Moe. In 1313 the prime minister of Paris issued a decree, approved by Parliament, on the transfer of disputed lands to the king, before a final decision was made.
He participated in the campaign of Philip V the Long , who gathered for Easter 1317 feudal militia for the war in Flanders. For this expedition, Jean equipped thirty soldiers, which, according to Andre Duchenne , testifies to the power of the house of de Montmorency, since sir Charles de Valois , Count of Alansons, prince of royal blood, had to expose only 20 soldiers, Robert III d'Artois - 30, Philippe de Valois - 40, Louis de Clermont and other princes - 40-50 each, and only the leader of the army Carl Valois and the younger brother of King Carl de La March - 100 each. The campaign ended with the signing of a truce, extended until 1318.
On March 31, 1320, another charter was known on donating land to a monastery in Argentan.
Jean de Montmorency died in June 1326 and was buried in a church in Conflans Sainte Honorine .
