Toyota A Series engines are Toyota's 4-cylinder in-line gasoline engines. A series engines consist of a cast iron engine block with an aluminum cylinder head.
Production of the series began in the late 1970s, when a new engine was developed for Toyota Tercel , the series replaced the Toyota K engines. The goal was to achieve fuel economy and optimal performance, as well as reduce emissions. It was in this series that the first mass 4A-GE engine appeared with two camshafts (DOHC system) and four valves per engine cylinder, and later also with five valves per cylinder.
Today, Toyota, with Tianjin's FAW Xiali, produces a 1.3-liter 8A, and 5A has also recently resumed production.
1A
The 1A engine has a capacity of 1.5 liters (1452 cc). It was produced from 1978 to 1980. All engine options were carbureted, had a belt drive of the 8-valve engine camshaft. The 1A-C engine was installed on the AL10 Tercel. The 1A-U engine used the Toyota TTC-C catalytic converter . This engine produced 80 liters. with. (59 kW) at 5600 rpm and 113 Nm of torque at 3600 rpm. The compression ratio is 9.0: 1. 1A-U was installed on the domestic Japanese AL10 Tercel / Corsa.
The cylinder diameter of engines 1A is 77.5 mm, the piston stroke is 77.0 mm. These engines replaced the T-Series, and 3A engines became their successors.
2A
The 2A engine has a capacity of 1.3 liters (1295 cc). It was produced from 1979 to 1989. Since 1982, 2A engines on the AL20 Tercels have received a modified valve cover and timing belt, as well as an automatic throttle and an automatically controlled hot air intake system. The compression ratio of the engine is slightly increased. All engine options use an eight-valve timing camshaft drive.
Engines 2A, 2A-L, 2A-LC show a power of 65 liters. with. (48 kW) at 6000 rpm and a torque of 98 Nm at 3800 rpm (compression ratio 9.3: 1). They were used on:
- AE80 Corolla (1983-1985, except Japan, 2A-LC engine in Australia)
- AL11 Tercel (1979-1982, except Japan and North America)
- AL20 Tercel (1982-1984, except Japan and North America).
2A-U, 2A-LU engines use the Toyota TTC-C catalytic converter . Power 75 L with. (55 kW) at 6000 rpm and a torque of 106 Nm at 3600 rpm (compression ratio 9.3: 1). These engines were installed on cars only for the Japanese market:
- AE80 Corolla (1983-1985)
- AL20 Corolla II (1982-1986)
- AL11 Corsa
- AL20 Corsa (1982-1989)
- AE80 Sprinter (1983-1985)
- AL11 Tercel
- AL20 Tercel (1982-1989)
The cylinder diameter of engines 2A is 76.0 mm, the piston stroke is 71.4 mm. These engines replaced the 4K-series, and 2E engines became their successors.
