Biography

He came from small landowners, graduated from the course in the Kiev Theological Academy ( 1761 ). He studied medicine in St. Petersburg , served in hospitals, took part in the war with Turkey and, after retiring, settled as a private person abroad. He continued to study medicine in Edinburgh and London . He received a medical degree in London ( 1774 ), continued his studies in Paris . In addition to medicine, he worked in London and Paris, archeology, oriental languages, became a member of several scientific societies. It is believed that during this period S. R. Vorontsov [1] , apparently, defend Italinsky in front of A. A. Bezborodko and the future chancellor chose to be tutors for his nephew V. P. Kochubei , who was then abroad.

Bust italinsky

Being in 1780 in Paris , Italinsky was introduced by F. Grimm to the future emperor Paul I , who was then traveling abroad, earned his location, and was promoted to collegiate assessors and was appointed secretary of the embassy in Naples in 1781. In 1795 he received the post of ambassador in Naples [2] .

In 1801 he was transferred as ambassador to Constantinople . Among Italinsky's diplomatic achievements is the Bucharest Peace Treaty (1812) , which he negotiated with MI Kutuzov . Italinsky also dealt with the diplomatic support of Russia's failed attempt to establish control over Malta ( 1799 ).

From 1817, he became a messenger in Rome , where he died in 1827 (he was buried in Livorno , in the Greek Orthodox cemetery , because in Rome the burial according to the Orthodox ceremony was difficult).

In Italy, he studied the history of art and archeology, gathered a significant museum. Even when he was in Naples, the Academy of Arts asked him to observe Russian artists who lived in Italy. After the relocation to Rome, the Italinsky became more actively involved in the fate of Russian artists in Italy. However, there is information that sometimes he treated young masters with hostility and even a bit viciously [3]

As an amateur and connoisseur of arts, the Italinsky in 1822 was elected an honorary member of the Academy of Arts, and after his death his bust (the work of S.I. Galberg ) was placed in one of the academic halls.

The scholarships of Italinsky remained unpublished. In addition to the above-mentioned bust [2] , a portrait of the Italinsky work by O. A. Kiprensky (1819, NGHM [3] ) is known.
