Biography

Born on January 4, 1872 in Ljubljana.

Here he attended elementary school and gymnasium. Then, together with his family, he moved to Zagreb , where he began to show interest in painting, studying at a gymnasium school. After graduating from high school, Matia entered the Faculty of Law of the University of Zagreb , but in 1890 dropped out and went to Munich , where he entered a private art school. Two years later, he returned to Ljubljana, where he made a living with his drawings, creating illustrations for the magazine Dom in svet .

In order to continue his education and with the support of the regional Sejm Krajn , Yama returned to Munich in 1897, where he entered the art school of Anton Azhbe . The next year he entered the Munich Academy of Art, but did not finish his studies there. In 1902, Matia Yama married the Dutch artist Luiza van Raders . After that he lived and worked in different places in Europe - in Austria, Croatia, Germany and the Netherlands. Later he returned to Slovenia, for some time he lived in the cities of Bled and Volchiy Potok . Then he moved to Raszyce and later settled in Ljubljana . Collaborated with other Slovenian impressionists.

He died on April 6, 1947 in Ljubljana. The Slovenian town of Jamova cesta near Ljubljana is named after him.

Creativity

Mostly the artist worked in oil, but at the end of his life he used watercolor . He worked as an illustrator and created posters; illustrated, in particular, the books of the modernist writer Ivan Tsankar . In the late period of his life, the impressionists became his idols, among whom Claude Monet was the most influential. Mostly Matiya Yama was a landscape painter, also wrote Vedut .
