Historical background

In Kura, roads leading from Italy to various mountain passes converge. The ancient Romans founded the colony of Curia Raetorum here - the administrative center of the province of Reaction First. Historically, the city served as the center of a vast area, which included the fertile Valtellina Valley (within the borders of modern Italy).

Medieval Chur is a typical episcopal city of Swabia . The bishops of Kura , the first information about which appears in 452, were admitted to the number of imperial princes in 1170. They belonged to the largest landowners in southern Swabia (the east of modern Switzerland and Vorarlberg ).

To counter the strengthening of the bishops and the Habsburgs , the locals united in 1367 into the Union of God’s House ( Gotteshausbund ), which served as a counterweight to church authorities until 1799. In 1464, a fire broke out in the city. German-speaking builders restored it, because of which the population of the city gradually became from a German-speaking Romanian. After Napoleon's invasion , the episcopal lands were secularized , and Chur was admitted to the Swiss Confederation as the capital of the canton of Graubunden.

Attractions

The Catholic Cathedral of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary (XII-XIII centuries) and the palace of the bishop (the current Baroque appearance since 1737) remind of the reign of the bishops in Kura. Protestant Church of St. Martina, laid back in the VIII century, was rebuilt in the 2nd half of the 15th. The old mansions of the city patrician have been preserved. Tourists are also attracted to the Giger bar - a figment of the fantasy of the famous science fiction artist from Kura . There are museums in the canton and Recy.
