History
Poto was based on the Poto River in 1885. And the name of the river, in turn, was given by French researchers at the beginning of the 18th century.
In the years 1886-1887. the Southern Railway line leading to Paris , Texas , was laid through the city. In 1887, a post office was opened here. In 1896, the Kansas City, Pittsburg and Gulf Railroad began to operate, in 1900 this railway became part of the Kansas City Southern Railway .
In 1898, Poto was incorporated and received city status.
Geography
The total area of the city is 82 km², of which 74 km² of land and 7.8 km² of water. The city is located 19 km west of the state border of Oklahoma and Arkansas. The city is located in the Cavanal Hill Valley.
Demographics
According to the United States Census for 2000, the population of Poto was 7,939, there were 3,013 households, and 2,042 families lived in the city. The population density is 107 people per km². The density of houses is 45.2 per km². Racial Composition: 82.14% White , 0.38% Asians, 2.24% Blacks , 10% Native Americans, 0.03% Hawaiians and Pacific Islander, 1.39% Other Races, 3.83% Descendants of Two and more races.
