History

The first major tournament for the Croatian national team after the collapse of Yugoslavia was the 1993 European Championship , where she managed to take only 5th place. Quite quickly, the Croats managed to become one of the strongest water polo teams in the world and already in 1996 the Balkan team reached the final of the Olympic Games , where in a bitter struggle they lost to the Spanish team. In 1999, the Croats for the first time became winners of the continental championship, having won silver medals in the European Championship . Since the beginning of the 2000s, the results of the national team have declined and for a long time the Croats could not even reach the semifinals of major international tournaments. In 2007, the Croatian national team became the world champion for the first time and subsequently throughout the 5 world championships the Balkans did not fall below 3rd place. The biggest success in their history, the Croats achieved in 2012, when in the final of the Olympic tournament they beat the Italian team 8: 6 and won the Olympic gold medals. In 2017, at the World Aquatics Championships, the national team repeated the success of 2007 and for the second time became the world champion, winning the Hungarians in the final with a score of 8: 6.
