The King of Saudi Arabia is the head of state and head of the Royal House of Saudis . The first king of Saudi Arabia was the king of Najd and Hijaz Abdul-Aziz ibn Saud ; all subsequent kings are his sons. The basic law of Saudi Arabia recognizes the right to the Saudi throne of the sons and grandsons of Abdul-Aziz, but does not specify the order of inheritance.

Since 1986 he has been holding the title Guardian of Two Shrines , introduced by King Fahd instead of the title "His Majesty". “Two Shrines” are the holy mosques of al-Haram in Mecca and the Mosque of the Prophet in Medina . Prior to the kings of Saudi Arabia, this title was worn, in particular, by the rulers of the Arab Caliphate , the Egyptian state of Mamelukes and the Sultans of the Ottoman Empire .
