The city got its name from the Pennsylvania Main Line railway station of the same name, which in turn was named after the Irish village of Ardmore .

History
In 1887, the Santa Fe Railroad was built in the area. Then the first street of the city appeared. The big fire in 1895 destroyed a significant part of the city. At the turn of the XIX-XX centuries, the area around the city was famous for cotton breeding.

The total area of the city is 134.1 km², of which 129.2 km² of land and 4.9 km² of water.
