The Misunderstood
The Misunderstood was formed in the mid-1960s. at Riverside , California . At the beginning of their career, the group moved to London and recorded several songs before breaking up. Despite a short period of activity and a small amount of creative heritage, they are considered influential in the genre of psychedelic rock [3] [4] . The group was influenced by The Yardbirds , however, Campbell’s style of playing the guitar was the hallmark of its sound. Rolling Stone Magazine (issue 956) in a September 2, 2004 review described Campbell of The Misunderstood as “ Jeff Beck and Jimmy Page Fused Together” [3] [5] .
Career after Misunderstood
After the collapse of The Misunderstood in London in 1967, Campbell reformed the band with new members and invited Steve Hord, the lead vocalist of Bush's former frontman. The renewed team no longer performed psychedelic rock , but was focused on pop and blues rock . The musicians recorded two singles on the Fontana Records label before Chord left the band and it then split up [6] .
Soon after, together with some musicians of The Misunderstood and with the participation of British musicians, Campbell creates a new group, which took on the name Juicy Lucy . One of the achievements of this group was getting into the British charts with a cover version of Bo Diddley ’s song “ Who Do You Love? ". The group also released two albums that became successful [7] .
After the collapse of Juicy Lucy, Campbell joined Joe Cocker's accompanying band and toured the United States with him. He also played with Sammy Hagar , Steve Hord and with a group of Rod Piazza Dirty Blues Band [8] .
In 1982, Campbell again reformed Misunderstood along with original vocalist Rick Brown called The Influence . Then they recorded the single No Survivors / Queen of Madness on Rough Trade Records (Great Britain). In 1998, Cherry Red Records (Great Britain) released the full album The Misunderstood: Broken Road (CDM RED 147) [9] .
In 2004, Ugly Things Records (USA) released another full album of previously unpublished recordings entitled Misunderstood: The Lost Acetates 1965-1966 , which attracted the attention of international media [10] [11] .
Campbell currently resides in New Zealand and plays in his own band, and also works as a session musician.
