The first ten years of his adult life, Allen worked in the aircraft industry. At the age of 16 he became interested in jazz , which prompted him to start playing drums at the age of 18. He played drummer Jack Horwood for two years. Later he studied for a short time with American drummer Philly Joe Jones. Colin's first public performance took place at a skiffle band competition held at a local cinema. Later on he continued to perform with many jazz musicians of Bournemouth. In 1963, Allen became a member of the Zoot Money's Big Roll Band , a group of Zuta Mani, which at that time already had guitarist Andy Summers (later The Police ) [1] . Until recently, Allen occasionally still performed with the Big Roll Band at The Bull's Head pub during his visits to London. On January 1, 1964, Allen moved to London with Summers.
