History
Sir Alexander Hood (1726-1814), the younger brother of Samuel Hood, 1st Viscount Hood (1724-1816), was an outstanding naval commander. In 1794, the title of Baron Bridport was created for him in the Irish Peer system with the right of succession for his great-grand nephew Samuel Hood, the second son of Henry Hood (later the 2nd Viscount Hood) and the grandson of the 1st Viscount Hood. Alexander Hood, the uncle of the first Viscount Hood and the first Viscount Bridport, was the ancestor of the Baronets Fuller-Ekland-Hood St. Audrey and the Barons St. Audrey. In 1796, the title of Baron Bridport from Cricket St. Thomas in Somerset County ( United Kingdom ) was created for Alexander Hood; on June 16, 1800 he received the Viscount Bridport title from Cricket St. Thomas in Somerset County ( United Kingdom ). The last two titles were created with the right to inherit by his male descendants. Alexander Hood was a member of the House of Commons of Great Britain from Bridgewater (1784-1790) and Buckingham (1790-1796).
In 1814, Alexander Hood, 1st Viscount Bridgeport, died without male offspring in 1814 . The titles of Baron Bridport and Viscount Bridport were interrupted after his death. However, the title of Baron Bridport Creation of 1794 was inherited by his aforementioned grand-nephew , Samuel Hood, 2nd Baron Bridport (1788-1868). He sat in the House of Commons from Heightsbury (1812-1818). In 1810, 2nd Baron Bridgeport married Lady Charlotte Mary Nelson, 2nd Duchess of Bronte (1787–1873), the only daughter and heiress of William Nelson, 1st Earl of Nelson , older brother of Horatio Nelson, 1st Viscount Nelson . Lord Bridport was succeeded by his son, Alexander Nelson Hood, 3rd Baron Bridport (1814-1904), who was a general in the British Army. On July 6, 1868, the Viscount Bridesport title was created for him from Cricket St. Thomas in the counties of Somerset and Bronte ( United Kingdom Peersty ). In 1873, he also inherited from his mother the title of Duke of Bronte (Duca di Bronté) in the Kingdom of the Two Sicilies . This ducal title was granted to his ancestor Horatio Nelson in 1799 by King Ferdinand I as a reward for supporting his kingdom.
He was succeeded in 1904 by his eldest son, Arthur Hood, 2nd Viscount Bridport (1839-1924). His younger brother, the Honorable Sir Alexander Nelson Hood (1854-1937) received the title of 5th Duke of Bronte. The 2nd Viscount Bridport, a member of the Conservative Party, represented West Somerset (1868-1880) in the House of Commons. He was succeeded by his grandson, Rowland Hood, 3rd Viscount Bridport, 6th Duke of Bronte (1911-1969). He was the son of the venerable Maurice Henry Nelson Hood (1881-1915), who died in the battle of Gallipoli in 1915 . Lord Bridport was a lieutenant commander of the Royal Navy and from 1939 to 1940 served as Lord while awaiting the government of Neville Chamberlain .
