Biography

After the authorities eliminated the bandurists in the Poltava Chapel in 1934, Panasenko moved to Kiev (1934), for a short period some members of the chapel were attached to the choir under the direction of Nestor Gorodovenko (the Dumka chapel).

In October 1935, he became a member of the United Bandura Band Chapel under the leadership of M. Mikhailov, where he worked as a soloist until the outbreak of World War II . As a tenor, the soloist recorded a number of works on records, accompanied by a bandura band chapel.

In 1935-1941 he was a soloist of the Kiev State Bandura Band Chapel . Since 1942 - artist of the Ukrainian bandura-band chapel named after T. G. Shevchenko in Detroit . He died in Detroit on September 7, 1965.

He was a leading soloist and a good bandura player, whose lyric-dramatic tenor is one of the best voices of the chapel. It was he who sang the heroics of the chapel program: “March Ukraine”, “That gray-haired cuckoo cuckoo”, etc. As a person - extremely noble, intelligent, he was very devoted to the Kobzar cause. When he arrived at the factory upon arrival in Detroit, four fingers of his left hand were cut off on the machine there. And the Kharkov method of playing involves both hands, but he did not leave the chapel. He managed to adapt to play his part with his right hand, and uninterruptedly took part in all the activities of the chapel, in particular a tour of Europe in 1958 and others.

For a long time he was a member of the artistic council of the chapel, a member of its council (secretary). He recorded his valuable memoirs “On the history of the development of the Bandura-players Chapel ...”, which were published in the journal “Vesti” ( Minneapolis , USA , 1963), and later they were almost completely included in the book “Living Strings” by Ulas Samchuk . As an eyewitness and participant, he describes in detail and interestingly the history of the Poltava Chapel of the Bandurists from 1925. “Memoirs” contains noteworthy references to cooperation with Gnat Khotkevich and his attempt to consolidate the state’s status as the chapel, which happened later after the merger of the Poltava and Kiev chapels in 1935. He went around the history of the Kiev chapel, apparently due to the fact that he was not a direct participant in it. However, he was a staunch apologist to consider 1918 and the Kobzari Khor as the source of the T. Shevchenko Ukrainian Bandura Band.

He went to emigrate with his wife Olga Alexandrovna, whose daughter - Alu - adopted. Had two granddaughters.

On the tombstone (Evergreen Cemetery, Detroit) are carved notes and words of his most famous tune "On the Blue Sea" (From the song "That Gray-haired Cuckoo").
