Biography
Origin
Jarlax, in his own words, is one of the youngest sons of the matron, Yvonnel Baenre . Like Drizzt , he was the Third Son of the house and was to be sacrificed by Lolth , but the matron of Oblodr’s house secretly intervened in the ritual and protected the baby with mental magic, because of this, Baenre's mother could not kill her son with a dagger. Then it was considered the blessing of Lolth , and the newborn Jarlaxle - her chosen ones. As an adult, he left the ruling House and founded his own organization Bregan D'Ert , took control of the "underground" world of Menzoberranzan.
At Menzoberanzan
Jarlaxle took part in almost all the intrigues of Menzoberranzan. He was a frequent visitor to both Baenre House and Do'Urden House, a close acquaintance with the gunsmith Zaknafein. His warriors in the ranks of House Gan'ett stormed Do'Urden, then switched sides right in the middle of the battle, bringing Mother Malice victory. Jarlaxle was not loyal to anyone, not even his own people. He was an undercover intelligence agent for the deep gnomes and provided them with information for a decent fee.
After Malice's failure to attempt to kill her renegade son Drizzt, Bregan D'Erth, as part of the House of Baerre, destroyed House Do'Urden. The cunning mercenary also benefited from this: he included in his gang Dinin and Virna, the last surviving children of the House. Bregan D'Erth took part in the attempt of Virna Do'Urden and Artemis Entreri to capture Drizzt. At the same time, Jarlaxle flaunted that he had nothing personally against the renegade ranger, but only pursued the goal of improving his position. In Starless Night, Jarlax catches Catti-Bree and then helps her and Artemis Entreri organize an escape from Menzobernzan while saving Drizzt.
In Calimport
After moving to Calimport, Jarlax used his new ally, Artemis Entreri, to overthrow one of the mafia leaders, Pasha Basadoni, and take his place. Entreri became the nominal head of the Basadoni guild, but in fact he was a puppet in the hands of the dark elves who did not risk acting openly. Jarlax rightly feared that if the participation of the drow became known to the heads of other guilds, they would jointly gang up on them.
Depression Entreri bothered Jarlaxle, who wanted the killer to be in better shape. The mercenary set up his fight with the eternal enemy of Artemis, the tracker Drizzt, and allowed Entreri to kill him, hoping that this would bring peace of mind to the killer. After the duel, Priest Rai'gi, by order of Jarlaxle, secretly resurrected Drizzt.
Also, the mercenary took possession of the magic crystal Crenshinibon. With the help of a magic mask that once belonged to Drizzt, and later Entreri, Jarlaxle tricked Drizzt and his friends, and, taking the form of Priest Cadderly , took the crystal from them. Soon Crenshinibon began to exert an excessive influence on the mind of the leader of the drow: he suddenly became overly ambitious and conceited, wished for new conquests and triumphs. Jarlaxle tried to fight the will of the crystal, but more and more yielded to it. He erected two magic towers in honor of himself and began to openly fight with other guilds.
Concerned members of Bregan D'Erth conspired to end the mad ringleader. Entreri, who remained the only ally of Jarlaxle, forced him to take the crystal to the priest Cadderly , who destroyed him in the flame of the dragon Hephaestus. After that, the mercenary and the killer were forced to go to wanderings. The temporary head of Bregan D'Ert remained Kimmuriel Oblodra.
Return to Ranger
Jarlax, along with a new companion, Atrogate, appears in the Pirate King book. Atrogate gives battle to Drizzt on one of the streets, during the war of pirates and magicians in Luskan. Then comes the meeting of Jarlax and Drizzt, where the Wandering ringleader Bregan D'Erth assures Drizzt of his innocence in what is happening in Luskan.
Further, Jarlax and Atrogate are among the main characters in the continuation of the Transitions trilogy, King Ghost. Noticing the paradox of magic, they decide to turn to Cadderly for help. Having betrayed Atrogate to Brenor as an ambassador from the dwarf clan, Jarlaxes pushed the battle ax clan company to move to Cadderly for help, as Brenor's adopted daughter and Drizzt's wife, Catti-brie was one of thousands of victims of Mystra's tearing weave. On the way to the Temple of the Soaring Spirit, Drizzt and the rest of the adventurers join Jarlax with Atrogate, who had to prove their intentions to help their comrades with arms, as well as their interest in resolving problems with magic. In the temple itself, Jarlax and Drizzt learn that Hephaestus is to blame, the dragon who merged with Crenshinibon and Illithid and called himself the King of Ghosts. Its existence destructively affects the weaving of Mystra, and also awakens the dead and summons various monsters from the plan of shadows. It was only Cleric Cadderly who could defeat Dracolic, and after the next attack by Hephaestus, Cleric, using Regis's suspension, passes over Catti-brie to the Shadow Plan, where the final battle takes place. Returning, Cadderly is no longer a man, but just a spirit, which is now the King of Ghosts on the Ruins of the Temple of the Soaring Spirit. The next turn of the plot is the strange death of Catti-brie in the walls of his native Mithril Hall. After spending the last night with Drizzt, she disappears in front of her husband's eyes (taking Regis, who was lying at the death, with him, thereby saving him from suffering), who turns to Jarlax for help, asking her to find her and a halfling. Find by all means.
After the Plague of Magic, when Abeir united with Toril and the Netherese returned to Toril, Jarlax was subjected to the psionic intervention of a Netherese magician and forgot to save his companion, Artemis Entreri, actually selling him into slavery to the Shadovars. Many years later, when Entreri returned his identity, he seeks revenge on Jarlaxle, who betrayed him.
Jarlax is the inspirer and manager in rebuilding the Luskan Mage Tower, because he is interested in preserving his city. Without the current Tower of Mages, Luskan will face an imminent disaster caused by the liberation of the fiery Forerunner in the bowels of Gauntlgrim. When Quenthel Baenre, trying to increase her political presence on the board of the matron of Menzoberranzan, tries to revive the Do'Urden house, she does this using members of Bregan D'Erth, but ignoring the interests of Jarlax and Bregan D'Erth. She, encouraged by Lolth, participates in the deception of Gromph Baenre and Kimmuriel Oblodre, playing on the passion for the omnipotence of one and the desire to return the mother from the Abyss of the other. Thus, Lolth causes the psionic and archmage to provoke the destruction of the barrier, and the demonic princes go to the Underdark, no longer preventing Lolth from increasing his own power. Jarlax has to diplomatically use all the acting characters to achieve his goals: to restore the unrestored tower, drive the princes of demons from Menzoberranzan, restore his own trade routes (for which he can clean up the Dreadgrouge Grimlgrim), heal the suffering of a severe manic-depressive disorder of Drizzt Do'Urden, save his from participating in Quenthel intrigues, etc.
The result of his actions is the attraction of Gromph to his side, the achievement of harmony between former enemies Drizzt Do'Urden and Artemis Entreri, as a bonus, Lolth returns to him a friend who was killed many years ago by Zaknafein.
In computer games
Jarlaxle appears in the fifth chapter of Baldur's Gate II: Shadows of Amn , in the underground drow city of Ust Nath. He pushes the player on a mission to steal stones for him, which turns into a trap. However, a mercenary rewards a successful mission.
In MMORPG Neverwinter there is a character Jarlax Benre (Icewind Valley, Ker-Koenig, tavern "Hook, fishing line and sinker"). Upon achievement of a certain progress in the game, he gives out tasks for obtaining class artifacts.
